Relationships
Lawrence Bedford
Lawrence Bedford is your husband. Although he is a Duke and ranks higher in aristocracy than your late father, he is newly-titled and does not have the pedigree like your family line. This is likely the reason he married you, as you came into the marriage with little or no money due to your father's debts. You find him rather boorish and misogynistic because he looks down on your gender and thinks women possess neither a fine palate nor the intellect to understand business matters. It does not appear that either of you frequent each other's bed chambers, even to procreate and ensure an heir, as he appears to be more interested in expanding his business and wealth.
In Chapter 10, you discover that he is having an affair with Mina.
Nat Pippin
Nat Pippin is the tutor your husband hires to teach you and keep you occupied and out of his hair. You find yourself attracted to Nat, and you can choose to flirt with him/her or try to keep distance between you two. No matter your choice, you find yourself thinking lustful thoughts involving Nat, and though he/she cannot read your mind, Nat often makes sexual innuendos towards you. You try to remind yourself not to indulge in such fantasies because your mother and sister rely on you to stay married to the Duke for their social status and you believe the Duke would not stand for such scandal. However, when Nat informs you that he/she cannot remain in your employment forever and that your studies with him/her will eventually end after a few months, you are upset at the thought of your relationship with Nat ending.
When you confront Nat about this, Nat tries to minimize the affections he/she feels for you. It takes the hunting trip and your brush with danger for you two to be more candor with your words. In Chapter 10, after discovering your husband's tryst, you tell Nat about your feelings. Even if you do not directly romance Nat, you feel that your internal turmoil was unfaithful to your husband and now you feel betrayed by Lawrence as well.
Miss Campbell
Miss Campbell is your maid at the Duke's estate. She helps you dress and gives you information and gossip she hears about your peers as well as the household staff. She always warns you to exercise caution because servants see everything and certain ones are loyal to Mr. Penderton, whose own loyalty lies with your husband despite the respect and status your presence brings.
Mina Bitmore
Mina Bitmore is your adversary through no fault of your own but by circumstances. Although she married a wealthy man, she did not elevate her status with a title and remains bitter and jealous because of it. You can choose to respond to her barbed comments with wit of your own, and if you choose to, you can also learn about her secret affair.
Cecily Wharton
Cecily Wharton is your new confidante, a friend you make in your peer group of other ladies who gives you gossip and information about the others, especially Mina. Hers is also a marriage of convenience, but in her marriage, both her and her husband seek intimacy with others.
