Relationships

Captain

When you arrive on a South Pacific island and your prepaid guide to Moku Island breaks his word and refuses to bring you there, you meet Captain, the only person willing to brave the waters for a fee. You find Captain attractive, but also a person of few words, most of which are snarky and guarded. Although Captain is able to navigate past Moku Island's rocky deterrents, a lightning storm damages Captain's ship and strands you both on the island.

Throughout your adventure with Captain on the island, it is your choice to flirt with Captain and/or grow your bond with him/her. You two retrieve supplies from Captain's ship in Chapter 2, find a fresh water source in Chapter 3, and set up camp in Chapter 4. You also have the option of helping Captain retrieve a beloved ukulele, take a moment to jump into the fresh water pool from a cliff, and decorate your camp to make it more homey in those respective chapters. Captain also offers you the opportunity to learn to fight in Chapter 4, expand your diet with ripe dragon fruit in Chapter 5, learn to start a fire with a flint in Chapter 6, and learn to spearfish in Chapter 7. Regardless of your choices, you know that you must rely on each other to survive and attempt to summon a rescue party.

If you decide to romance Captain, you have opportunities to kiss him/her beginning with Chapter 3 and to become intimate starting in Chapter 7. Regardless of your level of romance or intimacy, Captain turns cold towards you in Chapter 7. When confronted, Captain explains his/her loss and his/her distrust of strangers. You can reassure him/her and Captain resumes opening up towards you. In Chapter 9, you share a kiss with Captain as you two stare up at the starry night sky.

In Chapter 11, when you two discover a laboratory base hidden in the rainforest, and meet Dr. Halani Hale and her partner Tak Yakone, you two must rely on each other to escape the scientist's unethical experiments. Captain takes a bullet to the shoulder, courtesy of Tak, to protect you, and you two jump into the ocean to get away. Later, you two sleep on tree branches, above the ground and out of view but are awaken from a volcanic earthquake.

With the knowledge that time is running out, you and Captain return to Dr. Hale and Tak's camp in an effort to distract their workers from your true goals, to reclaim Captain's boat which Tak stole. You can choose to help Captain fight against Tak's hired help or have Captain fight them alone. After a bout of your own against Dr. Hale and watching her perish in a stream of lava, you retrieve Tak's gun and can either kill him/her yourself or throw the gun to Captain to allow him/her the closure. With your enemies dead, you two set sail away from the island, barely fleeing Moku's eruption. When the volcano has settled and you two are in calmer waters, you have the choice to end your relationship with Captain or tell him/her that your adventure was only the beginning.

One year later, you return to the island in the South Pacific, having written and published your findings on Moku. You meet Captain again and if you chose to continue your relationship, you exchange words of love and kiss.

Halani Hale

You meet Dr. Halani Hale in Chapter 11 when you and Captain discover her base of operations hidden on the other side of Moku Island. Although Captain is immediately distrustful of her, it is your choice to be optimistic or cautious. She is respectful towards you, and as a fellow scientist, she wants to sway your opinion of her, her experiments, and their results. Your opinion of her drops as you realize she set up the trap for the parrot, the extent of her experiments if you choose to investigate her laboratory, and how she and her fellow scientists torture animals. Even if you voice your disgust to her, she still tries to convince you that the end results justify the means.

When she realizes you will not change your mind, she decides that you and Captain will be the first humans she will experiment on. In an effort to escape, you can choose to stab her in the shoulder or hand with a kabob skewer. If you fail, she angrily tells you that you missed. In Chapter 16, as Mount Moku begins to erupt, she blames you for all her troubles. You can choose to confront her and tell her that Moku was not set to erupt for years, but her pollution of the environment caused the cycle to increase; you can also call her a disgrace and that she will have no legacy or you will personally see to it that she is stripped of all awards and accolades. Or you can decide she is not worth the energy and make a run for the boat. When she runs after you, she sets off one of her animal traps, which catches her by the foot. You can choose to help her out of it or leave her to die. Either way, she cannot outrun the lava stream and is swallowed by it and you do not regret your decision.
