Although his/her default name is "Raine", the name is customizable, as is his/her gender and species.

Personality
Your personality depends if you are a human, an elf or an orc. Generally, you are a person longing for adventure and the chance to see the world.
Background
You were orphaned at a young age with Kade about twenty years ago when bandits killed your family. You two were adopted by a kind farmer. When asked, you don't speak much about the farmer but just say that it's been you and Kade for as long as you remember and that he is your "brother", your best friend, and your only family. You enjoy listening to him recant one of his stories at the Dancing Pig Tavern in your hometown of Riverbend. Although he always thought that he'd live life through books, you dreamed of adventure and the world outside Riverbend.
When you and Kade were ten and twelve years old, you had dared Kade to steal a pie because you both were hungry. Unfortunately, it was an eel pie not an apple pie, and you were chased by an angry goose to the point that Kade tripped and fell and landed in the pie.
When you two were sixteen, you and Kade came up with a crazy plan to get some wine off a traveling merchant. You both got gray wigs and Kade got a fake mustache and you both pretended to be elderly wine connoisseurs. In the middle of it all, when you both were drunk, Kade's mustache fell off into his goblet, he fished it out and stuck it on the merchant's face. You laughed so hard that red wine came out of your nose.
You also had a crush on the mayor's son or daughter, but you were seen as below them in status due to your orphan upbringing. That did not stop your feelings though, and when you two got together in his parlor, the mayor and the city council walked in on you.
At your first spring festival as an adult, you wanted to impress everyone in Riverbend with your baking skills. You stayed up all night to bake a spring blossom cake, but in your exhaustion, you substituted salt for sugar. Suffice to say, you did not win the baking contest to your chagrin.

Relationships
Kade
Kade is your human "brother" although you two are not blood related. You were raised as orphans together after your families died in a massacre just outside the city. The two of you were raised as siblings by a farmer in Riverbend. Growing up, the two of you connected over stories of adventure, although he was content just reading, you always wanted to go on said adventure. He seems to know more about the adventure culture though, as in chapter one, Mal refers to you as a "kit", and Kade has to explain the term to you. Whether or not Kade is older, younger or the same age as you is up for debate. In some stories there's a 2 year age gap and in others, you mention you're the same age.
When you were 10 and 12, you had dared your brother to steal a pie from a villagers window. While running off with it, a goose started chasing after him, and Kade tripped and fell into the pie. That's when you found out it was an eel pie, and not an apple one.
When you were both 16, you tricked a traveling merchant into having a wine tasting by making them think you and Kade were elderly wine connoisseurs with grey wigs. During the tasting, Kade's mustache fell into his goblet, and he was so drunk that he tried to put it on the merchants face. You laughed so hard that wine came out of your nose.
When Blades of Light and Shadow starts, you're both in your 20s, in the Dancing Pig tavern, while he retells a story of the Dreadlord. After running out of the tavern for not having enough money for your drinks, you run into Mal Volari. If you choose to flirt with him, Kade is stunned. Later, when in the Temple of Ellara, Kade gets trapped in an onyx shard. This is when your character is determined to get him back. You were always protective of him but this exemplifies it.
Mal Volari
Mal is one of your love interests, but it doesn't start this way. If you choose to flirt with him when you first meet in Chapter one, he's amused by you, but ends up calling you a 'kit'. Since you don't know what this means, Kade tells you it's a term for new adventurers, like an apprentice. Since you don't have experience or even know the terms, Mal brushes you off. His blatant disregard of you gets under your skin, which even further motivates you to go on an adventure.
You don't see Mal again until the Temple of Ellara, when he's being held hostage and forced into opening a treasure chest. After it goes south, and you're forced to fight Duke Erthax, and Kade is trapped in an onyx shard. While you and Nia decide to join forces to rescue Kade and stop the shadow court, you have to bribe Mal into joining you two. This is where your adventure together begins, from there he's dedicated to this quest.
Nia Ellarious
Nia is one of your love interests. Like you, she has not seen the world beyond the place of her upbringing but she appears more inexperienced. She is a young priestess intent on following her late mentor's request.
Tyril Starfury
Tyril is one of your love interests. He joins your Party to track down the Shadow Court and destroy them. Although he seems distant at first, he eventually warms up to everyone and shows that he cares about your Party.
Imtura Tal Kaelen
Imtura is one of your love interests. She joins your party after one of her crew was subdued by the Shadow Court and attacked you in a tavern.
Threep Pompedorfin
Threep is a Nesper. He joins your party after he emerged from a green crystal, found in the Ruins of Ellara. He is perceptive, as he can sense if someone is under the influence of the Shadow Court.
Prince Aerin Valleros
Prince Aerin Valleros meets your character and your party in Book 1, Chapter 7 with his brother, Baldur. When you meet them, they're being chased by a drakna, so your group fights it off with them. The brothers stay with the party for three chapters, and your character has the chance to bond with Aerin. This can happen in regular scenes, but to have a substantial connection with him, you have to play the side quest "The Lonely Prince", where you have the chance to kiss him.
You can have a romantic relationship with him after this (although he's not a technical love interest), which will let you unlock the "Forbidden Affair" achievement using the seduction skill during fight scene of chapter 16.
In chapter 13, when your party travels to Whitetower, he welcomes your party upon your arrival. Later when The Temple of Light is revealed to be corrupt during their shard purification ritual, Aerin provides the party with an alternate ritual. This however is just a ruse to get the onyx shards, since he works for the Shadow Court. Despite the manipulation, he does admit he did like your character and your time together.
He becomes a love interest in Book 2.
Valax
In Book 2 Chapter 1, Valax kidnaps you and holds you captive in the Shadow Realm, and tells you that because you are a realm-walker, she will use your blood to conquer the mortal realm. You eventually manage to escape her by realmwalking back to Morella. In Chapter 4, she attempts to kidnap you once again and tortures your friends as a way to get you to "serve your purpose". If you have the Dream Essence, you make her channel dream magic that makes her have a waking nightmare before shoving her back through the portal.
In Chapter 12, she joins your group. Some time later, she becomes a love interest.
