Saffron, a character in the Kindred book, is your sister. She is first seen in Chapter 1.

Appearance

Saffron's appearance is dependent on the face chosen for Your Character. She wears a blue and pink floral crop top with matching short pants, a silver and blue necklace, various silver rings on her fingers, and a multi-colored silver bead bracelet.

Personality

Background

Assigned male at birth, Saff discovered early on that she would like to live as a girl. She told her mother who wasn't happy about the news but for other reasons than Saff assumed. Her mother put her in boy clothes for the middle school yearbook. For your birthdays, you and Saff used to dress up with Saff always getting you something nice to wear. Saff reveals that since she couldn't dress up herself as girl, she enjoyed dressing you up instead. The relationship with her mother was generally distanced and ten years prior to the start of the story, at approximately 17 years old, Saff left town and your family. During her absence, she apparently travelled around as in Chapter 1, you can mention her meditating in the Andes.

Relationships

Your Character

Saffron is your older sister. Saff left town and hence you about 10 years ago which is something you bring up a few times.

Maggie Graves

In Chapter 1, Saffron discovers Maggie Graves is her youngest sister. When Maggie starts to develop her ability to dreamwalk, she sees Saff dream about winning a Grammy. Your Character has to sometimes intervene when they argue.

Azalea

Saffron had an estranged relationship with her mother. When Saff transitioned, she believed that her mother didn't love nor accepted her. However, it is only revealed after her death that it was fear due your nature of being witches that caused Azalea to distance herself from her daughters. When you find that your mother kept a lot of personal things from you two, Saff believes that she was a hoarder rather than her actually caring about you two because of said distance.

Penelope

Saff and Penelope first meet in Chapter 2, and Penelope says that she has a soft spot for plant names like Saffron. Saff keeps having to correct herself while talking to her to the point where you say you should better leave. In Chapter 6, Saff mentions they have been texting a lot and a shortly afterwards, Penelope invites her and her sisters to a homecooked meal. Saff and Penelope bond over having grown up in the same town while feeling different and Saff expresses her wish they had known each other earlier. You can either tell them they can make up for it now and that it may be fate that brought them together which makes them both smile and then Penny will state that sounds nice; or you can tell them outright they can be more than friends which makes Penelope say that she would like that: she finds Saff adorable and has been trying to tell her for weeks.

Powers and Abilities

  • Shapeshifting: Saffron can alter her appearance at will. When she first gained her powers, Saffron was limited to shapeshifting into inanimate objects. As she developed her power, she gained the ability to shapeshift into small animals. This includes using the respective animal's senses as shown when she shapeshifts into a mouse to use its sense of smell to find a particular flower faster. Her mass apparently also changes to fit the object or animal she shifted into as demonstrated when she can sit on your palm as a mouse.
  • Warding Runes Removal: In Chapter 2, Guardian with the help of runes creates a ward around your house to keep the wraiths outside which at the same time locks you and your sisters inside the house. He/She tells you that you can leave once our coven learns to remove the wards which you then do together as a coven before your bonding ritual. You all then look outside to see the runes fading.

Weaknesses

  • Hex: If the whole coven or only one member of it isn't committed to a ritual while performing it, the spell will backfire, resulting in a hex. This is demonstrated when you, Saff, and Maggie end up being chained together after a failed bonding ritual.
  • Curses: Witches are not immune to curses and can even lose their powers. This is shown when Penelope reveals she actually comes from a line of witches. A curse made her family lose their talents, resulting in her being a human. Thus it can be assumed that Saffron may also lose her powers if put under the same curse.
  • Wraith Influence: Witches are not immune to the influence of wraiths on their emotions either. If the influence is too strong, their power is weakened, goes astray or stops working altogether. They are also not immune to being lured to places where they otherwise wouldn't go.
