Sadie Hotchmitch, a character in Dirty Little Secrets, is one of your Upstreet neighbors and a member of the HOA. She is first seen in Chapter 1.

Appearance

Sadie has long blonde hair, brown eyes, and light skin. She wears a black blouse and a burgundy blazer with a golden necklace.

Personality

Sadie is catty and passive-aggressive, hiding mean comments behind terms of endearment and a sweet tone of voice. She is also ambitious, as shown by her desire to be the next HOA president, and her promiscuity is evidenced by her numerous sexual partners. In Chapter 6, you discover that she is a gold digger who married a much older man for his money, and despite becoming independently wealthy as a result of his death, she is still on the lookout for future wealthy partners. You describe her as "calculative and cold." She only calls you and other Downstreeters "sweetie". In Chapter 17, upon learning that Allison was voted HOA president instead of her, she drops all pretenses and demonstrates her temper when she outright accuses Alicia of having sabotaged the vote, hurls her champagne glass at Allison who only barely dodges it, and then continues to throw and break any tableware she can get her hands on.

Background

Sadie originally grew up downstreet of Vermillion Lane, and was considered a nice "church girl". She had been keeping detailed notes on her lovers going all the way back to her 20s. She dated people her own age until she hit 30, and then began dating younger while simultaneously looking for a much older rich person to marry for their money. She disqualified anyone who might interfere with her ability to gain as much wealth as possible, such as having an addiction or requiring a prenup.

When she started dating the geriatric Jerry Hotchmitch from Upstreet (because his age and lack of family to contest her inheritance made him an easy mark), it shocked most of the neighborhood and Downstreeters who remembered her thought she became a hussy. She and Jerry honeymooned in Thailand, during which time she had plastic surgery to change her facial appearance and bust size. Since his death which occurred a few years after their wedding, she has been living comfortably off her inheritance.

Relationships

Your Character

Sadie dislikes you almost immediately. She claims it's because of your attitude and your eyesore of a house, though it's clearly also due to jealousy over how much attention Carpenter gives you from the moment you move in. She is usually hostile to you behind the thin veneer of a smile, but you often give back as good as you get and sometimes enjoy being able to get under her skin. She doesn't appreciate you standing up to her and says you won't last long in the neighborhood. When Sadie notices that you're becoming a threat to her and her plans, she starts accusing you of having murdered Valerie and thereby turns the neighborhood against you, fully aware that none of her accusations are true as confirmed by Carpenter in Chapter 11: her accusations are only a means to ruin your credibility.

Carpenter

Sadie flirts constantly with Carpenter and is always attempting to monopolize his/her time. She consistently asks for his/her help with fixer-upper tasks, keeps tabs on when he/she might be home alone, and strongarms him/her into joining her for community events such as potluck contests. She actively spreads rumors that Carpenter killed his wife but isn't wary of him/her the way many other neighbors are which makes you suspect in Chapter 3 that she's trying to scare other people away so she can keep Carpenter to herself. They won the fundraiser contest the previous year together, earning them the name "Sad-Charles/Charlotte". While investigating her house, Carpenter reveals Sadie trusted him/her enough to give him/her a spare key to her house in case Carpenter ever needed to use the restroom. In Chapter 11, Carpenter tells you that Sadie is aware that the he/she didn't murder his/her wife and confirms your suspicion from Chapter 3 that the rumors were only a way for her to be able to make a move on him/her without competition.

Valerie Wright

According to Sadie, she and Valerie were friends once, but that ended because Valerie couldn't leave well enough alone. During your first interaction with them, you witness Valerie casually putting Sadie in her place and Sadie's visible frustration with being treated this way before she falls in line. Immediately following Valerie's death, Sadie claims the spotlight to offer backhanded sympathy for how stressed Valerie must have been at the prospect of facing an HOA election against a younger and more attractive opponent like herself. She later hooks up with Valerie's husband at her wake, claims their problems are over now that she's dead, and steals HOA paperwork from her office.

Benjamin Wright

In Chapter 5, you learn that Sadie has been having an affair with Benjamin for some time. You can also learn that they were working together towards some unknown end, with Sadie distracting Valerie from a potential political career and Benjamin promising to support Sadie's own plans in return. If you read Sadie's black book, you learn that Sadie disqualified Benjamin as a possible husband because he was too spineless to leave Valerie for her. She seems unusually bitter about that, and you and Carpenter are unsure if it's due to her having genuine feelings for Benjamin, or if she just wanted to become Oak Valley's First Lady.
