RWB Theory Page

Welcome to the Roommates with Benefits Theory Page. This is a place where you can discuss confirmed, debunked, and unconfirmed theories from the Roommates with Benefits series.

Current & Unconfirmed Theories

Confirmed Theories

  • Setting: There is a high probability that this book will be set in a college or university, since this is where most people seem to have roommates. This is confirmed in the Behind the Scenes section of February 2023's newsletter.
  • Gender of the Main Character: Due to the fact that the title art of the book is pink, there is a theory that the book will be a female genderlocked story. This is strengthened with Pixelberry's December 2022 blog post when it implied that 2023's earliest books would be genderlocked.[1] Choices Insiders February 2023 confirms this when it is revealed that the first gender of choice book of the year is Crimes of Passion, Book 2.
  • Love Interests and Gender: Even though the book is still far away, players already have theories about the love interest(s) and their gender(s).
    • Roommate LI: Given the title of the story, it was theorized that our love interest will also be our roommate. However, it was unclear whether there would be only one roommate love interest or more. This was seemed to be strengthened by the "Sexy" and "Roommates" tags, but eventually the blog confirmed that there will be only one love interest who's our roommate.
    • Gender customizable single-LI: Due to the surge in single-love interest stories, it is believed that this one will be too. The theory for Gender customizable love interest is confirmed with the Sneak Peek of Drew, and the single-LI part is strengthened by Chapter 1's description and confirmed after the release of the book's blog.
  • Roommates meme: As far back as the announcement of the book and its name, players were quick to assume that there would be a reference to the "And they were roommates" meme somewhere in the book. This is confirmed with the reveal of Chapter 10's title, which has that exact name.
  • NC-17: Based on the title, many players theorize that this will be a mature-tagged story. This was initially debunked when the NC-17 tag was absent but confirmed when Pixelberry added the tag in April 2023.

Debunked Theories

  • Love Interests and Gender: Even though the book is still far away, players already have theories about the love interest(s) and their gender(s).
    • Same Gender: Another theory claims that if the love interests are only the roommates and if they are the same gender as the main character, it is possible that this will be a multi-LI book, with both the main character and love interests being genderlocked. Genderlocked MC is confirmed in Febuary 2023's newsletter. Same gender LIs is weakened with drafts of the cover. This book's blog post disproves genderlocked LIs.
  • Roommate's backstory: In a premium scene in Chapter 2, it is revealed that Roommate used to play music in the past, but then stopped. One reason for that could be a traumatic event, such as his/her parents being divorced, the death of a family member, or breaking up with someone he/she was in love with in the past. Tying to the divorce and break-up theories, it's also possible that one of the reasons Roommate is only into hook-ups and friends-with-benefits, is because he/she doesn't believe in love anymore and doesn't want to go through what his/her parents or he/she went through again. This is strengthened with the mention of Audrey Cole, Roommate's ex, in Chapter 3 by Dutch. However, it is eventually debunked as the reason for him/her wanting to keep things casual is entirely different.
  • Failing classes: Given that we skip classes and are focusing too much on partying and on spending time with Roommate and his/her friends instead of studying, there is a theory that our actions will catch up to us, and that we will eventually fail some of our classes. This could help us realize that perhaps we have made a mistake and Roommate is a bad influence, and that we will have to find a balance if we want to keep pursuing both a relationship and our studies. This is strengthened with Hiroko Takeda, one of our professors, who tells us that she needs to see the progress we have made in our video-project with Roommate. This is eventually debunked however, as no such thing happens.
  • Sequel's Main Character: Given that the sequel will feature a new couple, some players believe that there is a possibility that unlike the first Book, the second one might feature a gender customizable main character. This was however debunked when Pixelberry announced in the April 2024 insiders, the books that are Gender of Choice, and this book wasn't included.
