Trivia
- Mentions and references in Chapter 1 include Wonder Woman and Ariana Grande.
- The process of choosing the appearance of Ian/Ina Kingsley contains a reference to The Bachelor (if a male version is chosen) or its spinoff The Bachelorette (if a female version is chosen). The versions are labelled Bachelor/ette 1-3 and the game asks if you accept the respective model's rose.
- In Chapter 2, you can compare Ian/Ina to Batman. Poppy makes a reference to Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein when calling you FrankenBea and you, in turn, call her a dementor, a term that was repopularized by the creatures of the same name in the Harry Potter series. Chloe misunderstands and thinks you are talking about dementia.
- Within the first hour after release, a content warning has been added to the book.[28]
- Several names of the students shown on the ranking contain pop culture references. Examples include Ayre Bender (Air Bender), Karol Denver (Carol Danvers alias Captain Marvel), Natalia Romanoffa (Natasha Romanoff alias Black Widow), Steve Roget (Steve Rogers alias Captain America), Clint Burton (Clint Barton alias Hawkeye), Howard Deduque (Howard the Duck), Ernesto Pekutchu (Pikachu), and Rey Chu (Raichu). Burlington Coet-Faqtorite is a play on the company Burlington Coat Factory.
- In the July Choices Insider, the writers stated they came up with all 263 student names. Their favorites include: Penny Weiss (Pennywise), Ashe Kushumall, Ambrosia Sallade (Ambrosia Salad), Fil DuFutur (Phil of the Future), Macy Deiparaide (Macy Day Parade), Begonia Thotte (Begone, Thot), Luke Wachadunne (Look Whatcha Done), Alfredo Zauss (Alfredo Sauce), and Mary Nara (Marinara).
- In Chapter 5, more references include: Pocket Creature cards (Pokemon) and the author Jorge S.S. Martinez (George R.R. Martin). Professor Kingsley also buys the most recent book in D.E. Swanne's The Alchemicalists series. This may be a nod or a pun towards Dean Evelyn Swan and The Elementalists.
- In Chapter 6, Your Character mentions the show Young Wulfe. This is likely a reference to the show Teen Wolf based on the movie of the same name.
- Chapter 7 contains a reference to The Wizard of Oz when the narration states that "Toto, you are not in Farmsville anymore."
- The narration in Chapter 8 confirms that the story is set in 2020.
- Mentions and references in Chapter 8 include designer Franco Moschino (Zoey initially thinks you are talking about Maraschino liquor), the second time Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth broke up, Seth Rogen, Josephine Baker, Hepburn (likely Audrey Hepburn), Half Light, the VMAs, and Cinderella. Also, DaBebe (possibly a variation on DaBaby) retweeted your hog calling video, leading to your desire to remove all of his songs from your playlists.
- In Chapter 9, Benji's shrine of the MC is a reference to Helga's shrine of Arnold in Hey Arnold!
- At the end of Chapter 16, it is confirmed that there will be a second book.
