Relationships
With Each Other
During winter break (between Book 1 and Book 2), the Bhandaris took their children on a ski trip. However, they argued so much that the trip turned stressful for Ajay instead of fun. From Chapters 1 through 6, their fighting progressed behind closed doors as they struggled to appear calmer in front of others in public. In Chapter 3, Ajay mentions they put him in the middle of their fights and by Chapter 6, their fighting becomes competitive. Samir bought Ajay a high-end car which they can't afford, and both have been spoiling Mohit too.
When you are first introduced to Ajay's family, you notice the tension between his parents, Samir and Shruti. They are on the way to Portland to see "The Phantom of the Opera". Samir is willing to buy Mohit a cupcake but his wife objects. The strain and sadness is evident in Ajay's eyes. At the end of Chapter 6, Ajay tells you that his parents are getting a divorce. In Chapter 7, they signed the paperwork that morning to make it official. In Chapter 13, Ajay says Samir has gotten his own place and the divorce paperwork is being finalized. In Book 3, Chapter 5, Ajay mentions that the final piece of paperwork for their divorce was signed a few weeks ago.
Ajay
Mohit and Ajay have a loving little brother / big brother relationship.
After the divorce, Ajay mentions his father getting a place of his own, leading to the assumption that Ajay and Mohit live with their mother in their old house. He was previously worried that they would have to move to India to live with relatives there. Ajay doesn't mention his father after this, as his attention is redirected towards Shruti's new boyfriend, Jim, and his automatic dislike for the man he feels is trying to take his father's place. Shruti appears patient with Ajay during the transition and seems to want her son to be more accepting but does not reprimand him in public for any of his outbursts. Shruti volunteers to be one of the school's chaperones during their London trip, and brings Jim along. Mohit is not seen, and thus assumed to be with Samir during that time. In Book 3, Chapter 15, Ajay tells you that he apologized to his mom about his grouchiness towards Jim.
Your Character
In Book 2, Chapter 4, you watch Ajay's parents argue about giving Mohit more sugar at your twin's presidential bake sale. It is your decision to side with Samir and sell him the cupcake or side with Shruti and refuse his money. In Chapter 6, Ajay invites you to dinner to help with the stress he is feeling and it is your choice to go. If you do, you ease the dinner conversation with jokes and Mohit likes you. However, your help was fruitless as Ajay tells you later that his parents are getting a divorce. In Chapter 12, you can help Ajay deal with divorcing parents by attending a peer-lead support group in a premium scene.
Jim
In Book 3, Chapter 5, you see Shruti, Mohit, and Jim in the library. Jim is Shruti's new boyfriend, and Mohit likes having a "second dad" and appears oblivious to Ajay's irritation. In Chapter 10, Jim accompanies Shruti as one of Berry High's chaperones, and in Chapter 15, Ajay mentions that Jim and Shruti have been dating for just a few months.
