Spoilers
- On September 5th, 2017, it was announced that a new high school themed book was in the works through Choices' social media pages.[1][2]
- This is the first book that has had all of its chapters released at once with the exception of the first three initial books, The Freshman, Book 1, The Crown & The Flame, Book 1, and Most Wanted, Book 1.[3]
- On September 8, 2017, the day after the book's release, Pixelberry released a blog post about the series. It confirmed that Max Warren was named after writer Max Doty, even though they are opposites in temperament.[4]
- On November 16th, 2017, Pixelberry released the soundtracks of the series.[5]
- Limetown Studios designed the book covers of the High School Story series.[6] [7] [8]
- On September 7, 2018, Rachel Steinkamp, one of the writers for this book, released an anniversary poster for it since exactly one year ago today, this book was first published.[9]
- On July 19, 2019, Laura Shigihara, who sang the theme song First Day for all the High School Story books and the High School Story app, sang it live.[10]
Trivia
- This is the first book to feature a male version of a customizable protagonist on the cover.
- This book is the first to premiere on Thursdays.
- This is the second series that gives a last name to your character, the first being The Royal Romance series and the third being the Home for the Holidays series.
- The story is based on one of Pixelberry's other games, High School Story, and acts as a sequel to it, as the book takes place two years after the events of the original app.
- Payton, Julian, Autumn, Mia, Ezra, Nishan, Koh, Kara, Max, Wes, Sakura, characters in that game, make frequent appearances throughout the book.
- Like the characters mentioned above, the rival school, Hearst High, is also based on the rival school of the same name. Max and Kara are also students of Hearst High, a detail found in both the original app and the book.
- In Chapter 2, the series The Walking Dead is referenced.
- In Chapter 4, if you choose to go to the diner with Maria and afterward choose "Yeah, I've gone with a date", it will be mentioned that your character has an ex.
- Alternatively, if you go with Michael to the diner, you both choose one song to play on repeat on the jukebox. One of the options is Tom Jones' "What's New, Pussycat". This scene seems to be a reference to the lyrics of John Mulaney's Salt and Pepper Diner.
- In the same chapter, Principal Hughs mentions a character named "Blurble the Turtle". This is a reference to High School Story Prime that was also mentioned by writer Kathleen in a blog post from 2018.[11]
- Chapter 4 shares the same title as My Two First Loves, Chapter 30, and Surrender, Book 1, Chapter 12, "Consequences".
- In Chapter 6, if you choose to play the video game with the nerds, you will be fighting against another unskilled player called KappaKutie12345. The player is most likely Madison from the The Freshman series and its sequels. This strengthens the idea that all of Choices' series take place in one common universe.
- In Chapter 7, if Your Character is on the cheerleading team, s/he has the option to make a reference to Disney's Frozen by cheering "The cold never bothered me anyway". It will make the others laugh and thereby break some tension.
- In Chapter 10, if you choose to look under the tree, you will find an old gas mask. When you put it on, your character will ask, "Mummy? Are you my mummy?", a reference to "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances", episodes of a two-parter in the long-running sci-fi series, Doctor Who.
- In the same chapter, Your Character can make a reference to Mary Poppins by saying the word supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, but is interrupted by Maria in the middle of the word.
- The title of Chapter 11, "Berry's Seven", is a reference to the Ocean's Eleven film series. It is also referenced by Michael in the chapter itself.
- In the same chapter, Emma mentions Nancy Drew. Max sings a rewritten version of the Spiderman theme song in which he replaces the word Spiderman with "spirit stick".
- In Chapter 14, Luis makes a reference to Blade Runner but Emma doesn't understand it, so he has to explain that it's a reference.
- In the same chapter, if you have the karaoke machine, Luis will sing the same song that Your Character (The Freshman) sings together with her partner in The Freshman: Game of Love, Chapter 1.
- Chapter 15's final scene is recycled and expanded into the opening chapter of High School Story, Book 2.
- If you select the prom theme, 'Happily Ever After', Emma makes a comment about the Prince not choosing the waitress in the Coronation Ball. This is clearly a reference to the events of The Royal Romance, Book 1.
- The book took place over the course of six weeks.
