The mysterious Green Knight challenged the Knights of the Round Table to prove their boldness by striking him one hard blow with an axe on the understanding that in a year and a day, he would strike back in exactly the same way. Gawain eagerly took up the challenge and decapitated the Green Knight, but this did not kill him; instead he simply returned his head to his shoulders and reminded Gawain of his oath to accept the same blow the following year.

Since he of course could not survive decapitation, Gawain grew increasingly anxious about facing the Green Knight again, though he was determined to honor his end of the deal. He sought out the Green Knight on the appointed day, wearing a magical belt given to him by Morgana to keep him safe, and returned to Camelot later with the tale of their confrontation. If he chose to keep the belt on, he admitted that the Green Knight chastised him for his lack of honor. If he chose to take it off, the Green Knight struck him a very gentle blow to the neck, leaving only a thin scar, and revealed that the true test had been to see whether he would honor his word.

A version of this story originated in the 14th century with the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and is one of the most famous Arthurian legends.
