• On November 8, 2018, PB has previously confirmed that they have a number of books in different genres and settings in the works! They hinted at having pirate and a survival/zombie books respectively in the works, though they were careful to say they really can't confirm or deny the potential existence of the two types of books mentioned above.
• On November 30, 2018, it was announced that one of PB's 2019 releases is an untitled nautical drama book where we will sail the open seas.
• On January 11, 2019, PB teased that this book could potentially feature pirates during one of their Q & A sessions on Instagram.
• On March 6, 2019, PB confirmed via their AMA reddit session that we'd have to SEA what they have in store, thus confirming that Passport to Romance is not the Untitled Nautical Book that has been teased for a while now.
• On July 5, 2019, from their "Summer Reads and Q&A" blogpost, PB hinted that this is one of the brand new books that are in the work, saying "you'll sail the high seas with your pirate crew".
• On August 2, 2019, PB released the first sneak peek for the book.
  • A second sneak peek was later released and it shows a picture of a parrot.
• On August 16, 2019, the title of this book was revealed to be Distant Shores from their blogpost, "Three Years of Choices".
  • It also includes a third sneak peek featuring two new characters.
  • It confirmed that the player would get to play as heroine or hero, making Distant Shores a gender of choice story.

• On September 30, 2019, PB announced that the series would be released "early in 2020".

  • Megan describes it as the story of a modern young hero or heroine who finds him-/herself swept back to the 18th century. While s/he embarks on a swashbuckling adventure, s/he can't help but wonder if s/he'll ever make it back home (or if s/he even wants to).
  • They wanted to take the drama and angst of a time-travel romance and place it with the fun, colorful backdrop of a pirate story.
  • Regarding love interests, we get to choose between the sexy pirate captain, Edward, the bold and beautiful Quartermaster, Charlie...and there may be a Royal Navy officer who captures your heart while trying to capture your crew.
  • When asked what they were most excited for the fans to see, both Megan and Tom said animations and artwork, feeling that it brings the story to the next level.
  • When asked which member of the crew they could be best friends with, the writers feel that all the women in the crew are badass, but feel that Ginny holds a special place in their hearts, describing her as the youngest but fiercist. Tom also has a soft spot for Jonas.
• On March 25, 2020, PB also released another teaser video and revealed the release date being Friday, April 3rd.

  • On the same day, PB confirmed the book to be a standalone.
• On August 7, 2020, PB shared a behind-the-scenes look at one of the backgrounds in their Choices Insiders mail.
• On January 22, 2021, PB confirmed again on their blogpost that Distant Shores would not have a sequel.

Trivia

• This is one of the books that reuses the main character's female faces of Open Heart, the others being: Sunkissed, Bachelorette Party, Platinum, Baby Bump and Mother of the Year. The main character's male faces are from Blades of Light and Shadow.
• This book uses the same mechanic as Mother of the Year and Blades, in which a heart shows up next to romantic dialogue options or actions.
• In Chapter 1, the player hears the crew sing a song called "The Holy Ground". It is a traditional Irish folk song often sung as a sea shanty.
• In Chapter 2, your character can break the fourth wall by making a reference to the game itself while playing two lies and a truth, saying you've read stories where you control the ending.
• Chapter 8 shares the same title as the 1985 science fiction movie Enemy Mine.
• Chapter 9 shares the same title as The Royal Heir, Book 2, Chapter 14, "Battle Lines". 
• In Chapter 9, depending on choices, Edward will reveal that he's from Grovershire and a female MC will compare herself to Anne Bonny.
• Chapter 11 has the song "Holy Ground" by Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem if you decide to recruit Robert's crew.
• Chapter 12 shares the same title as America's Most Eligible: All Stars, Chapter 8 and My Two First Loves, Chapter 80, "Enemy of My Enemy".
• Chapter 13 shares the same title as Hero, Vol. 1, Chapter 6, "Friendly Fire".
• Chapter 15 shares the same title as High School Story: Class Act, Book 3, Chapter 9, "Race Against Time".
