Quote1
Quote2
I'd rather be a free man in a dangerous profession than a safe fool oblivious to the harm he causes.
— Edward to Your Character[1]

Edward, a character from the Distant Shores book, is the captain of the Revenge crew and one of Your Character's love interests. He is first seen in Chapter 1.

Appearance

It is up to the player what Edward looks like. His outfit consists of a red shirt with a dark blue and yellow leather jacket with a belt around his waist. He wears a strap over his left shoulder, holding his sword and wears a silver necklace.

Personality

"I've learned through bitter experience that a wise man keeps his own counsel."
—Edward to You

As the captain, Edward is loyal to his crew and cares a lot for his crew members. He is extremely dedicated to his work as a captain, to the point that if you say you believe he kissed a mermaid during Two Lies and a Truth, Charlie teases him by saying he'd be more likely to ask a mermaid for advice on ocean currents than a kiss. He believes a captain should have an unshakable will, the ability to inspire and offer loyalty, and the strength to take responsibility[2]. He feels that if he demands obedience from his crew, he should be accountable for their safety and their lives; and a captain who doesn't understand that obligation should not be in command.

He also has a sense of humor, seen in his enjoyment of annoying Robert[1], and likes to read[3]. Despite being a pirate, he is a fair and honorable person. He insists that you be treated fairly by the crew until your trial and compensates the people of Tiburon for use of their port by sharing the crew's plunder with them[4]. He explains that many members of his crew don't have somewhere they can expect to be welcomed with friendship, and he wants that for the members of his crew. If you ask him what he wants most in life, he says that he wants justice and he won't allow himself to have other, more personal goals until justice has been served.

Because he is invested on exacting revenge against the Admiral[5], he is not sure how to enjoy life anymore[6].

Background

Edward grew up at Grovershire[2], a small village in England. Because there were few opportunities for advancement and his mother couldn't support them after his father died, he decided to leave and make his own way. He didn't always want to be a pirate; for a short time in his youth, he wanted to be a stagecoach driver. He was about Ginny's age when he started to work on a privateer's ship. There he learned how to sail, how a proper crew works, and what it takes to be a good captain. He took well to the sea and in time, the captain of the ship --Captain Elliot-- decided to mentor him, becoming a second father to him. At the age of thirteen, he became first mate and a few years later, he became captain of his own ship.

Back then, he was a cheerful young boy and he believed in an honest world and happy endings[6]. However, he was also reckless and foolhardy. He wanted enough money so he nor his mother would have to worry again. That was when he met Francis Cochrane, an officer in the Royal Navy. Cochrane offered him money to be his lackey, follow his commands[7] without question. He attacked the ships Cochrane wanted him to attack and sank the ships Cochrane wanted to be sunk. Life was good -he could buy his mother a proper house- as long as he didn't ask questions. He even had the privilege of meeting the Queen of England, to whom he bent his knee, and she gave him her blessing[8].

However, he knew what he was doing couldn't be right, that the money was too good to be true, and so he began to suspect Cochrane's intentions. When Cochrane told him to destroy a village that was hiding a Spanish commander with his crew of thieves and murderers, Edward did. Instead of leaving though, Edward went to the village afterwards to check if the Spanish commander was indeed dead. What he found there haunts him to this day. Families of innocent people were dead, not the criminals Cochrane claimed were present. From that point, Edward turned from Cochrane, no longer following the law proudly[1]. He would rather be a free man in a dangerous profession than a safe fool oblivious to the harm he causes.

Relationships

Your Character

Edward is one of your love interests. Immediately after you are sent backwards to the past, he protects you in the battle with the British Navy and brings you aboard the Poseidon's Revenge. While you await trial, he insists that the crew treat you well, making sure to protect you from Robert's bullying and suspicion. In Chapter 3, Edward realizes something is wrong with your accent, which he cannot place. If you decide to tell him the truth, he finds it hard to believe and tells you that you have a vivid imagination. If you show him pictures from your phone, he believes it's witchcraft and can't tell if you're drunk or crazy. When you tell him about Robert's plotting, he makes you promise not to tell anyone and thanks you.

In Chapter 4, Edward thanks you again if you warned him about the mutiny. In Chapter 6, you can choose to perform with him, Adelia and Axton at the circus. In Chapter 8, you can choose to explore the deserted island with him and swim with dolphins. In Chapter 9, both of you hide the majority of the ship's plunder and the golden compass in a cave with the intent of retrieving them later. In Chapter 10, you have the option to convince Oliver into locking you up with Edward, so you can tend to his wounds. You also have the option to kiss him for the first time. In Chapter 12, you can choose to rescue him from the Admiral's ship with Samuel and Jonas. If you do not, Samuel and Jonas retrieve him without you.

In Chapter 15, you, Edward, Oliver, and Charlie pursue Robert and the Admiral into the temple. When the path leads to three roads, you must decide who to go with. If you decide to go with Edward, you can choose to look into your future with him. There you see your continued life as a pirate, but you and Edward have a son and Edward has never looked happier. You are happy for a short time before you see yourself yanked into another time where you find a museum exhibit noting Edward's legacy after you disappeared. Back in the temple, you have the choice to tell him your vision or to lie about your tears.

"For years, I've been telling myself that what I want must wait. That vengeance must come first. It never felt like a hardship, not until I met you."
—Edward to You

When you meet back up with Oliver and Charlie, before you can continue, Edward collapses from the poison dart that earlier nicked his skin. With Oliver and Charlie's help, he stands and states that no matter what, he intends to stop the Admiral and will not allow you three to proceed without him. When you four defeat the Admiral, you return to the present. If you visit the Maritime Museum, you find out that you had returned at least several times to be with him and to continue your pirate adventures. The museum curator tells you that after you disappeared for the final time, Edward spent his days sailing the Seven Seas in search of you.

Robert

Robert was originally the captain of his own ship before his crew merged with Edward's and he became first mate of the Revenge. He resents Edward and his loss of power, and in Chapter 2, he plans a mutiny against Edward. His mutiny fails though but before he can be locked in the brig, Samuel rescues him and the other mutineers and they escape the Revenge.

Admiral Cochrane

The admiral and Edward have a history together. If you try to ask Edward more about their relationship, he is evasive and doesn't tell you anything in the beginning. Throughout the chapters, Edward opens up slowly, revealing that he believes that Cochrane is an evil man and that he would protect the world from him if he could[3]. The Admiral is responsible for a tremendous loss of innocent life but not in the eyes of the law, as he's careful to make sure not to bloody his own hands. Edward intends to rectify this.

In Chapter 10, Edward and you are taken prisoner on the Admiral's ship. The Admiral tortures Edward later to force you to reveal the location about the compass.

Charlie Smith

Charlie stays loyal to Edward, even as Robert starts the mutiny against Edward. She tells you, that she doesn't always know what's going on in Edward's head, but even with all his moods, she knows his heart and trusts him.

Edward [to MC]: At the risk of sharing too much... annoying Robert has always been a favorite pastime of mine.
