Flashback: Rheya was about to be sentenced to death by King Kaelisus of Mydiea for scratching his face after rejecting his advances. Prince Xenocrates appealed to his father to spare her life, as killing her would incur the wrath of the gods. In response, Kaelisus had her banished to a cave with her hands tied. Once Rheya was in the cave, a soldier later revealed to be Gaius Augustine took pity on her by unshackling her, allowing her to escape. | |||||

Flashback: Gaius and Adrian were in a forest during the civil war observing a group of soldiers who are celebrating. Gaius orders Adrian to kill them, saying that this is so they can be free and for the preservation of the vampire nation. They end up killing all of the soldiers, even a young boy. | |||||

Flashback: The people of the court in Ancient Mydiea are drinking and being merry. This is halted when Rheya, now a vampire, violently enters the room, terrifying everyone. Gaius regretably shares with King Kaelisus that he had no choice but to help Rheya break in. Kaelisus orders the guards to kill her, but Rheya violently kills them. Kaelisus begs Xenocrates to help him, but he declines, right before Rheya kills him. Xenocrates and Gaius beg Rheya to not kill them and to let them follow her as her disciples, to serve and protect her. She accepts and tells them to join her in eternal life. | |||||

Flashback: Jax is in New York, the 1970s, at a club - he's human. He's approached by a woman named Margot; she compliments him and also flirts with him, before inviting him back to her place. On the way there, she turns into a vampire and bites him. Before he dies, a homeless man Jax was kind to reveals himself to be a vampire and turns Jax. | |||||

Flashback: Serafine is holding a gala and is surprised to by Kamilah's attendance. Both are openly fraternizing with Gaius, in fact, he's Kamilah's date for the evening. Gaius' newest protege, Adam Vega, appears as well as Marcel Lafayette. Everyone is having a merry time, dancing and enjoying pleasantries until the Knights from the Order of Dawn attack the guests and the party. Gaius tries to defend the party-goers and his friends, but he is given a fair fight and he is almost killed, until Kamilah saves him. Gaius wishes the world was not as hateful as it is. | |||||

Flashback: Rheya is with Prince Xenocrates and Gaius Augustine, now both vampires after being turned by her. She sits in the court somewhere in Ancient Mydiea, where it's dark, empty, and bloody. Prince Xenocrates tells Rheya that the neighboring countries are surrendering to her. She is pleased by this turn of events. When Xenocrates has doubts, Rheya patiently eases them. She subsequently spews a lot of negativity regarding humans, especially in regards to how they mistreat one another for personal gain. Rheya claims that now that she has power, she is a goddess and there will be no more mistreatment and pain. A group of humans is then brought before her, Xenocrates, and Gaius to feed on while the humans scream in horror. | |||||

Flashback: Gaius Augustine and Kamilah Sayeed lie in bed together. They talk about Rheya and Gaius tells Kamilah that he calls her his queen because he used to call Rheya his Goddess. He also says that he will always love Rheya since she made him who and what he is. Gaius adds that it doesn't mean that he cannot love Kamilah as well. When talking about Rheya, Kamilah notices that his eyes turn wet, which also makes her sad. They leave the building and find chaos outside from a fight with the Order that causes many victims. They decide to use this opportunity to feed. | |||||

Flashback: Xenocrates knees before the Tree of Eternal Life and touches it when Rheya tells him not to or she will end him. Rheya reveals that because of her blood flowing through him, she can sense his desires and movements, and therefore knows about his plan to betray her. Gaius starts insulting him but Rheya interrupts. She thinks that Xenocrates wants to drink from the tree to become her equal, but he reveals that he wants to make a stake to end Rheya. According to him, she has become no better than his father, responsible for the sacrifices and wanting to burn the world down and rule over the ashes. He considers the tree to be a test for humanity to show decency, but they all failed because all they caused was bloodshed. Xenocrates pushes Rheya against the tree and a branch impales her. Her skin turns wooden and the tree absorbs her entirely. Gaius is in despair, sobbing and screaming, while Xenocrates flees. | |||||

Flashback: Adrian and Kamilah are sent by Gaius to steal naval plans from the British. Although Kamilah insists she can handle the mission alone, Gaius had forced her to have Adrian come along, who she doesn't trust because he hasn't been a vampire for very long. During the mission, Adrian saves Kamilah from a Redcoat and starts to earn her trust. She sympathizes with him over losing his family and tells him that being a vampire gets easier with time. After retrieving the plans, they set fire to the British ship they were on and walk down the harbor together. | |||||
Bonus Scene
This bonus scene is a teaser for the next book.
In modern day Greece, a fisherman returns to shore and finds Rheya on the beach. She asks him what the world is like and what she has missed. The man tells her the world has been the way it's "always been" with too much technology and apathy. He asks her if she's all right. She responds "I will be." as her fangs descend.
