Astoria Yao

Astoria, a character in the Immortal Desires series, is a vampire, the principal of Crimson Beech High, and the leader of the Venandi Coven. She is first seen in Book 1, Chapter 1. She becomes one of Anastasia's love interests in the non-canonical side-story, Villainous Valentine.

Appearance

Astoria has long wavy brown hair, brown eyes and light skin. She wears a silver necklace with a purple gemstone, a black camisole under a translucent black blouse with flowers and dots, and a black and golden belt.

Personality

While Astoria can be intimidating, according to Clyde, she doesn't really hate humans, she just sees them as food. She is also honest, as she doesn't play mind games and means business when threatening the lives of people she despises. She's also a strict principal, as she once suspended a student for two days for chewing gum.

Background

She is the leader of the Venandi Coven of Vampires.

Clyde says the only thing keeping the peace between Lewyn and Astoria are the rules they wrote when they first settled in Crimson Beech.

Venandi Coven

As Lewyn is with his coven, Astoria is very protective of hers. In Chapter 7, Cas tells you that she did not authorize the attack on you from the certain members of her coven and is furious with them.

Cas Harlow

Cas belongs to the Venandi Coven, which is Astoria's clan. Not much is known about their relationship, but they seem to share similar mentalities when it comes to vampires and humans. What's more, Cas is very loyal to Astoria despite angering her sometimes with his/her attitude and behavior. Astoria on the other hand is very protective of Cas and the rest of the members of her coven.

Powers and Abilities

Enhanced Strength: Vampires are stronger than most humans.
Enhanced Speed: Vampires can travel faster than humans.
Ley Lines: Ley lines are underground sources of energy that vampires can utilize. They give vampires the ability to be resilient to sunlight.
Memory Manipulation: As revealed in Book 1, Chapter 16, Astoria and Lewyn performed a sacred ritual to tap into the ley lines, allowing them to swipe and change the memory of all humans of what happened during the Creator's attack. The details of how it works and who else is able to use the power are unknown to normal vampires like Cas and Gabe.

Weaknesses

Aversion to Silver: Silver can burn vampires. Several vampire-hunting talismans use silver as a ward against vampires, and specifically prepared silver can paralyze them.
Decapitation: Dismembering or manually removing the head of a vampire will result in instant and permanent death.
Sunlight: Originally, vampires found sunlight to be debilitating and were greatly weakened under its gaze. This changed when vampires found ley lines of power that nullified this weakness.
Ley Lines: While the ley lines nullify the weaknesses vampires have to the sun, this is dependent upon contact with the ley line and if the vampire leaves Crimson Beech, they will swiftly lose this power.
Vampire Blood: Vampire blood is poisonous to other vampires. Even a drop or two is enough to make a vampire ill.
Bloodlust: When vampires do not regularly feed, they are in danger of turning "feral", unable to reason with or talk to until the thirst for blood is quenched.

The name Astoria is one for girls of English and German origin and means "Like a hawk". It's the feminine form of the surname Astor and the name of a place in Queens, New York.
Her crimes include torture.
The non-canon special Immortal Desires: Paths Not Taken allows you to determine her fate within that book.
- If the ley lines are gone and the covens are at war, the principal of Crimson Beech High is now Principal Vidal. It's unclear what happened to Astoria, but it is possible that she died or was forced to resign due to not being able to go out in the sun anymore.
- If you choose to romance Gabe and have a good enough relationship with Cas, you reveal that Astoria told Cas to destroy the Red Beech Tree during the Creator's attack. You then decide if she should be forgiven, imprisoned, or executed.
